WOMAN SMOKING - WALL PAINTING IN THE EXHIBITION - PLACE KIBLA PORTAL

Petra Varl, who is an artist and a professor of drawing at the University of Maribor’s Faculty of Education, expresses herself through various techniques, but always returns to drawing. Her wall painting Woman Smoking was created as part of a unique group exhibition Don’t be afraid, you are the best, which was exhibited in 2014 at the Kibla Portal in Maribor. The artist also participated as a selector and mentor and invited students as well as established artists to participate in the event. Through this, she encouraged creative dialogue between generations of artists who were, each in their own individual artistic poetics, producing creative work on the emptied walls of an industrial building. Petra Varl placed the image of a woman smoking, often reoccurring in her works, on the balcony wall of the exhibition space. The work expresses her minimalistic approach with characteristic clear lines and simple figures, while the subject is depicted during a daily activity - smoking. The author remained faithful to her distinctive, simple artistic expression and a complete absence of colour, which creates a special contrast upon application of the image on the wall.
