La traviata, an opera classic on Slovenian stages

Slovenian Theatre Institute

Lecture / 03.03.2026, 18:00 - 19:30

What did the story, based on Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias, mean to Slovenian audiences? How do former leading performers remember it?

The lecture before the premiere of the new Ljubljana production will present La traviata between provocation and opera classic in the approaches of individual directors, as well as how audiences responded to different stagings. The lecture will be complemented by a discussion with opera singers Milena Morača and Martina Zadro, and the director of the new production in the SNT Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, Frank Van Laecke. The discussion will offer an insight into the creation of the main female role in the performance and into various encounters with the work’s musical source.

The evening will be prepared by Dr. Gašper Troha (Slovenian Theatre Institute) and Sonja Kerin Krek (SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana).

Seating is limited. Free tickets for the discussion can be reserved by email at blagajna@opera.si or in person at the Opera box office.
